Women's Cross Country Turns Attention to MWC Championships

About the Pre-NCAA: The Falcons competed in the women's 6K Pre-NCAA cross country race held at Iowa State University in Ames. The team was 45th in the 56-team field, which included 20 of the top 30 ranked teams. "I was very please with the women's results," said Head coach Mark Stanforth. "The team handled the field of competition very wellthe competition level was equal to a national meet. The women's team from Brigham Young won the race.
Top Leaders: Team captain Jaime Flood was the Falcons' leader in the 6K. In the field of 355 runners, Flood finished 146th and posted a time of 23:06. Jean Taylor finished 196th with a time of 23:38. Following the leaders were Elissa Ballas with a time of 23:44 (202nd), Tracy Denaro in a time of 23:45 (204th), Kelly McPherson who posted a time of 24:42 (291st), Sara Kinney in 25:38 (341st) and Stephanie Cornell with a time of 25:42 (342nd).
About the Tiger Invitational: The Academy's women's cross country "B" team traveled to Fort Hays, Kansas to compete in the Fort Hays State University Tiger Invitational. The team finished fourth, scoring 60 points. The women's team from Barton County finished first.
Top Leaders: All but one Falcon turned in top performances. Brandess Pardue from Aurora, Colo., was the leader in the race finishing fourth in a career time of 19:22. Anne Chumlea who finished sixth with a time of 19:27 followed her. Lara Coppinger finished ninth with a time of 19:41. Dalia Wenckus placed 15th in a time of 20:10. Kristen Thompson finished 21:11 as the 27th runner to cross the line and Kari Thompson was 38th in a time of 22:20.
Upcoming Events: The women's team will compete again Oct. 28 in the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships in Fort Collins. The team will travel to Ogden, Utah Nov. 11 to run in the NCAA Mountain Regional meet.
