Air Force team captain Will Gettys had a solid tournament. Gettys, a junior from Goose Creek, S.C., finished third among 95 epee competitors at the Division II level. Competing at Division III, Gettys finished in second place among 62 fencers.
On the women's side, Falcon fencer Elia Burrill, a sophomore from Truckee, Calif., had a surprising finish. Burrill, a newcomer to fencing who walked on the team last season, finished third among 43 fencers at Division III epee.
The next tournament for the Air Force fencers will be the Denver Cup, another in the series of North American Cups. It will be an important tournament for the selection of the Under-20 World Championship teams which will compete at the World Junior/Cadet Championships in Gdansk, Poland in April 2001. The American's top cadet and junior athletes will be in attendance.
More than 700 participants will compete in different age group events in the three fencing weapons (foil, pe, saber), spread over the different age categories. Competition for the four-day event starts Friday, Nov. 3. Fencing begins at 9:30 a.m. each day and will continue through the early evening.
