About the Tournament: The Falcons rifle team fell to UTEP at the Southwest Invitational tournament Saturday in El Paso. UTEP outscored Air Force, 6090 to 6059. The Falcons are now 0-2 this season against UTEP, with an opportunity next month to face the Miners at the Academy's home range.
Individual Shooting: In the air and smallbore rifle competitions, the Falcons blue team placed fourth and the silver team placed sixth. Individually in air rifle, C1C (senior) Daimon Geopfert had the highest score in air rifle of the Falcons, shooting 384. Following Geopfert in air rifle was C3C (sophomore) Nick Breffit (378). Other Air Force scores in air rifle were as follows: C1C Kevin Mandrik (376), C2C (junior) Mike Granberry and C3C Brian DeBruhl shot 371, C4C (freshman) Oliver Roe (369), C1C Rachel Westergren (365), and C4C Jason Waldow (347).
Individually in smallbore, Geopfert shot the best of Air Force (1152). Westergren shot 1137 and Granberry and Breffit shot 1135. Other Falcon scores were as follows: Mandrik (1129), Roe (1111), C3C Brian DeBruhl (1095), and Waldow (1092).
Upcoming: The Air Force rifle team enters its final month of competition in Feb. The Falcons compete against Murray State and Tennessee Tech in Murray, Kentucky Feb. 10. Air Force will be hosting UTEP the following weekend, Feb. 17-18, with New Mexico Military Institute and Wyoming who will be at the Academy for the NCAA Qualifiers. Both the first and second team Falcons defeated the Cowboys in Air Force's first match of the season in the smallbore and air rifle events. The Falcons also defeated the Cowboys twice at home Nov. 18.
