The Air Force cross country men's "B" team won its third consecutive Tiger Invitational title last week. The Falcons placed first with 39 points. Fort Hays State and Nebraska University took second and third, respectively. Leading the Falcons was fifth-place finisher Abe Wengel from Menonomie, Wis. Wengel ran 26:28 followed by Rudy Taute who finished seventh with a time of 26:36. The Falcons' third runner in was Luke Mostoller. Mostoller finished ninth in 26:45, a season best.
Only four women competed individually in the women's 5K race. Mary Uhler finished second with a time of 19:27. A runner from Fort Hays passed Uhler, who was at the top of the pack for most of the race, in the last 50 meters. Stephanie Cornell finished in 15th place with a time of 20:09 followed by Andrea Johnson (36th, 21:07) and Lorraine Burke (49th, 21:39).
"I was really pleased with the performances at Fort Hays. That's three in a row that the men have won and since it is the last race of the season for all but two of them, it's important to finish on a good note," said Stanforth. "Wengel and Taute earned the right to run in the top nine at the conference meet." Stanforth also said Uhler and Cornell will round out the women's team at the conference race on Oct. 27 in Albuquerque, N.M.
