"I am very proud of our teams," said head coach Abdel Salem. "Our teams functioned very well. They were excellent. Especially our mens team, which was without its top two fencers."
The men's team, ranked eighth in the country, dominated the first day of duals, winning six dual meets by an average margin of 20.3 points out of 27 possible points. The second day, the team stumbled against a solid Notre Dame (no. 2) team, losing 7-20. They won the remainder of their meets to finish the day 4-1.
The women also had a strong performance, winning all six dual meets the first day, including a 27-0 shutout victory over Purdue. Their only two losses came the second day, as the women fell to Notre Dame (no. 4) and Northwestern (no. 7).
"Hopefully, our results will give us some confidence heading to Duke," Salem said. "The competition will be tougher at Duke and we shall be challenged."
The Falcons will head to Duke for the Duke Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 9-10. They will face Stanford, the top-ranked team in the country, as well as numerous other solid teams.
