In the midst of an afternoon storm, the Falcons scrambled to finish in their first meet of the season, the Air Force Open. Although an intrasquad meet, head coach Mark Stanforth felt it was a good start to the regular season.
The Falcons had five runners finish 10-20 seconds faster than last year's times. All five finished together at 22:24. The top five was split between three seniors and two sophomores: C3Cs Chris Acs and Ben Payne and C1Cs Brian Carpenter, Albert Kelly and David Romero. C2C (Jr.) Rudy Taute and Brian Dumm a freshman from Fairfax, Va., rounded out the top seven with times of 22:44 and 22:50, respectively.
This is a first for the Falcons, who have never had more than three freshman run under 24:00 minutes in the five years that the team has run the course at Jack's Valley. This year, the team had six under 23:40.
When asked about the depth of this year's team, coach Stanforth said, "I'm concerned with our depth on the men's team. If everyone stays healthy, we will be fine, but an injury to one of those first five and we lose quite a bit. Hopefully a couple of our freshman runners will develop quickly enough to help this year."
