Miami beats Air Force, 12-1, in season opener

Miami (Ohio) handed Air Force its worst loss in many years as the Red Hawks defeated the Falcons, 12-1, in the first round of the inaugural Lefty McFadden Tournament at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. The game was the season opener for both teams.
The loss is the worst under Frank Serratore while the 12 goals allowed are the most since Maine beat the Falcons, 12-5, in the 1996 Denver Cup.
Miami, 1-0, scored four in the first period, but the Falcons battled back early in the second period Air Force came out strong for the first nine minutes of the second period and cut the red Hawk lead to 4-1.
Sophomore defenseman Ross Miller scored AFA's first goal of the season and the second of his career early in the second period. His slap shot from the top of the circle through traffic made the score 4-1 at 8:51. However, that was as close as AFA would get. Miami scored two goals late in the second for a 6-1 lead at the second intermission and then added six in the third.
Miami outshot Air Force 47-14 in the game. Air Force was 1-for-5 on the power play while MU was 3-for-9.
Miami goalie David Burleigh recorded his school-record 41st win as he stopped 13 Falcon shots. Mike Polidor started in the net for the Falcons and made 32 saves while allowing eight goals. Freshman David Goodley started the third period for the Falcons and played seven minutes, giving up four goals on seven shots in his first collegiate game.
Air Force, 0-1, will face College Hockey America rival Niagara in the consolation game, Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2:30 p.m. MST. Miami will play Bowling Green in the championship game.
