Marty Goulet scored two goals to lead Bemidji State to a 5-1 win over Air Force in a College Hockey America game, Friday, Feb. 8, at the John Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn.
Air Force (11-15 overall and 1-10 CHA) and Bemidji State scored early in a fast-paced and well-played first period and the teams settled for a 1-1 draw at the first intermission. Beaver forward Wade Chiodo drew first blood as he scored on a wrister from the right circle that beat Mike Polidor to the far post at 2:29. Air Force tied the game at 1-1 just over a minute later as Kyle Fransdal scored his fifth of the season. Fransdal took a pass from Justin Hamilton and Ryan Wiggins, skated behind the net and scored on a wrap-around. BSU out-shot the Falcons, 16-9, in the first period with most of those shots coming in the second-half of the period.
BSU, tied for first in the CHA with Wayne State, scored twice in the second period and twice in the third for the 5-1 win. Andrew Murray scored the game-winner at 2:51 of the second period from Jeff McGill and Goulet. Goulet scored his goals late in the second period and early in the third period. The line of Murray, McGill and Goulet scored three of the teams' five goals. Each player had three points in the game.
With just over five minutes remaining in the third period and Air Force trailing 4-1, the 1,110 fans rose to their feet as Air Force's Josh Priewe and BSU's Frank Udovich squared off at center ice in a rare college hockey fight. In a penalty-filled and chippy third period, the two went toe-to-toe for several minutes. Each was called for a five-minute major for fighting and a game disqualification. Neither will play in Saturday night's contest.
Bemidji State (12-12-3 overall and 8-2-2 CHA) out-shot the Falcons in every period and 37-20 in the game. Each team was 0-for-4 on the power play.
"Our confidence is low right now and we are struggling," head coach Frank Serratore said. "It was a combination of us getting out-shot, out-special teamed and out-goaltended. We need to put this one behind us. We worked hard tonight, but maybe we need to work a little smarter tomorrow night."
With the loss, Air Force has now lost five straight and eight of its last nine. The victory for BSU was its fourth straight and fifth in its last six games.
The same two teams conclude the two-game CHA series Saturday, Feb. 9. Faceoff is at 7:05 MST p.m.
