UConn freshman goaltender Scott Temes stopped all 32 shots he faced in leading the Huskies to a 1-0 win over Air Force in the championship game of the 11th annual UConn Hockey Classic, Monday, Dec. 29, at the UConn Ice Arena.
UConn won the tournament title and Air Force finished second. The Huskies improved to 5-8-4 overall while the Falcons fell to 7-9-2. Bentley College placed third after beating Sacred Heart, 3-2, in the consolation game.
The only goal of the game came early in the second period off the stick of Tim Olsen. Cole Koidahl made a pass from the corner to Olsen in the slot and his wrister beat Mike Polidor.
The game was very even as Air Force outshot UConn, 34-32, but the Huskies controlled the tempo of the game. UConn's strength was the determining factor in the game.
"We had very little physical presence," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We didn't go to the net and we were sloppy at times. Until we get more physical, we won't be a difficult team to play against. We just didn't play with much bite."
Polidor made 33 saves for the Falcons and Scott Temes made 32 for the Huskies. AFA was 0-for-4 on the power play while UConn was 0-for-5.
Air Force returns to College Hockey America play Friday and Saturday, Jan. 2-3, with a two-game series against Bemidji State. Friday's game is at 7:35 p.m. in Bemidji while Saturday's game is at 7:05 p.m. in Coleraine, Minn. Coleraine is the hometown of both head coaches, AFA's Frank Serratore and BSU's Tom Serratore.
