USAF Academy, Colo. - The Air Force men's swim team could not overcome a tough BYU squad, falling to the Cougars, 142-101, in a Mountain West Conference dual swim meet on Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Cadet Gymnasium's Natatorium. The loss drops the Falcons to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
"Overall, we raced well and I was pleased with our effort" AFA head coach Rob Clayton said. "We're where we need to be right now, and we will come back and be tough against Utah this weekend."
BYU, which improved to 2-0 in MWC meets, took first-place in nine of the 13 events, led by Mark Chay, who won the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events.
Air Force freshman Chris Knaute continued to swim well, finishing first in the 1000 (9:35.73) and 500 yard free (4:42.55) to lead the way for the Falcons. The wins gives Knaute, a native of Houston, Texas, five first-place finishes in his last two meets.
Seniors Paul Brehm and Eric Pounds also finished in first for AFA, with Brehm winning the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.89 and Pounds taking the 200 butterfly with a mark of 1:53.61. The win was a double-sweep for BYU, as the Cougar women's team also defeated the Falcon women, 140-96.
Air Force looks to regroup quickly, as they play host to Utah this Saturday, Jan. 24, back at the Natatorium. The dual meet with the women's teams, is the final home dual for the Falcons this season and begins at 1 p.m. MST
