Alabama-Huntsville scored three third-period goals and rolled over Air Force, 6-2, in a College Hockey America game Saturday night, Jan. 24, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
UAH improved to 9-8-1 overall and 8-4-0 in the CHA. Air Force fell to 10-14-2 overall and 3-8-1 in the conference. UAH moved into a tie for second place in the conference with Niagara with 16 points. Air Force is in fourth with seven points.
With five minutes left in the first period, UAH defenseman Jeremy Schreiber scored on the power play from Ryan Brown and Jared Ross. Three minutes later, Tom Starkey tied the game from Spanky Leonard. Leonard won the faceoff and Starkey rebounded his own shot to the tie score at 1-1.
UAH again took the lead on the power play as Craig Bushey scored at the 2:48 mark. Jared Ross gave the Chargers a 3-1 lead with a power-play marker at 16:02. UAH had outshot Air Force, 23-11, through the first two periods.
The Falcons made the game close early in the second period as Leonard scored just 43 seconds into the third period. Ryan Wiggins took a shot that hit hard off the back boards and Leonard put away the rebound to make the score, 3-2.
That was as close as the Falcons would get as Steve Milosevski scored at 2:23, Bushey scored again at 9:50 and Todd Bentley added another at 18:34.
UAH was 4-for-7 on the power play while the Falcons were 0-for-8 on the man-advantage. The Falcons had two minutes of five-on-three in the second period and 1:14 of five-on-three in the third period and were unable to score.
"They were the better team tonight," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They were stronger and more opportunistic. They are a very good team with a lot of experienced players. We had some self-inflicted wounds early but our guys battled back like they always do, and made it close in the third. We needed to get the next goal when the score was 3-2, but they got the next three."
Scott Munroe made 24 saves for UAH while AFA freshman Peter Foster made a career-best 34 stops.
Air Force is now idle until Feb. 6-7 when the Falcons host Findlay.
