It was a tightly contested battle between 17th-ranked Air Force and No. 18 Cal Baptist, but the Falcons found themselves on the losing end as Cal Baptist's Goran Milic notched a goal with 2:28 remaining in overtime to give the Lancers a 12-11 victory Saturday morning in the first game of the Rocky Mountain Showdown at Cadet Natatorium.
Cal Baptist (11-9) dominated the game in the early going, scoring three unanswered goals to start out the first quarter. The Falcons finally responded with 48 seconds remaining in the period as senior Murphey Morgan (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) had an unassisted goal to make the score 3-1 after one quarter of play.
The Falcons (2-14) came out strong in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to one point after a goal by senior Matt Herrera (Orange, Calif.). It seemed that it would be a back-and-forth affair, as both teams traded goals for the next four points. Down 5-4 with just 37 seconds left in the half, Morgan sent a long shot past Lancers' goalkeeper Jon Miller to score the equalizer, bringing the score to 5-5 at intermission.
The third quarter looked like it would be a repeat of the first with the Lancers rattling off three straight goals to take an 8-5 lead. However, a Chris Nary (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii) goal at the 2:22 mark ignited a streak of three straight scores by the Falcons. Following a crucial save by Air Force goalkeeper Jared Jones (Sr., Orange, Calif.), senior Eric Swenson (San Clemente, Calif.) tied the game with an assist by Herrera.
Air Force grabbed its first lead of the game at the 5:37 mark in the fourth period, as freshman Clark Condict (Irvine, Calif.) scored his second goal of the day. Nary then found the back of the net for the second time to give the Falcons a two-point cushion. However, Cal Baptist would not go away, scoring three straight goals to go back on top, 11-10. A goal by freshman Justin Berry (Windermere, Fla.) with 1:22 on the clock tied the score back up, forcing an overtime period.
With both teams going scoreless in the first three minutes of overtime, Milic quickly scored in the second three-minute period. Cal Baptist was able to hold off the Falcons to secure the 12-11 victory.
Five different Falcons--Morgan, Condict, Herrera, Berry and Nary--scored two goals each in the game, while Swenson notched the other. Leading the Lancers was Milic with four goals, including the gamewinner.
Air Force and Cal Baptist meet again later today with the second game of the Rocky Mountain Showdown, slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Cadet Natatorium.
