Falcons Sweep Ft. Hays Invitational

HAYS, Kan. -- The Air Force cross country team swept the competition at the Ft. Hays Invitational, winning both the men's and women's competition, on Saturday, Oct. 9, in Fays, Kan. Junior Lindsay Grose (Mission Viejo, Calif.) finished first among the 70 athletes in the women's race, while Richard Elmore (Napa, Calif.) led the men's team with a third-place individual finish.
Backed by Grose's winning 5K time of 18:41, the women tallied 43 team points, nine ahead of second-place Northern Colorado. Classmate Vivien Aspden (Yucaipa, Calif.) finished fourth with a time of 19:11, while freshman Kristin Trichler (Santa Barbara, Calif.) placed eighth in 19:26.
Kate Papenburg (Red Lion, Pa.) clocked a time of 19:41 to finish 11th, while Kasey Wilson placed 23rd with a time of 20:28. Candice Killian (21:22) and Katie Suhrhoff (21:34) placed 39th and 43rd, respectively. Amanda Lopez rounded out the Air Force competitors with a 50th-place finish and a time of 21:56.
Five Falcons in the top-10 highlighted the men's race, who recorded 31 points to easily separate themselves from runner-up Colorado (55 points). Elmore crossed the finish line in 26:08 to claim third-place, while senior Kyle Davidson (Houston, Texas) was close behind in fourth place with a time of 26:18.
Sophomore Jason Beck (Cincinnati, Ohio), senior Derek Storbeck (Wayne, N.J.) and freshman Dan DeRusha (Milford, Mich.) rounded out the Air Force contingent in the top 10, Beck clocked a 26:33 to finish sixth, while Storbeck and DeRusha finished eighth (26:36) and 10th (26:43) respectively.
Josh Van Wyngaarden (La Vista, Neb.) placed 12th, with a time of 26:52, while Calvin Glass (Antelope, Calif.) placed 15th, with a time of 27:15. Ian McFarland (West Plains, Mo.) and Chris Gausepohl (Fallbrook, Calif.) placed 23rd (27:46) abd 24th (27:51), while Kenny Grosselin (Ramstien AB, Germany) and Corey Pilinko finished 29th (28:08) and 30th (28:14).
Jordan Hughes clocked a time of 28:38 to finish 41st and Jared Graham (Blue Springs, Mo.) crossed the finish line in a time of 29:08 to place 49th. Chad Murray (Highland, Mich.) and Kevin Hawkins rounded out the Air Force competitors with times of 29:13 (51st) and 31:11 (64th).
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-NCAA Meet.
