Freshman defenseman Brian Gineo scored two goals late in the third period to give Air Force an improbable, come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Findlay in a College Hockey America game Saturday at the Cadet Ice Arena.
The teams split the two-game series as Air Force improved to 11-15-2 overall and 4-9-1 in the CHA. Findlay fell to 6-20-4 overall and 3-10-1 in the league. The Falcons are in sole possession of fourth place with nine points in league play. Findlay is fifth with seven points while Wayne State is sixth with four.
Findlay took a 1-0 lead in the first period when David Vogt scored his fourth of the season at the 14:27 mark. Vogt intercepted a clear by the Falcons at the top of the circle and sent a shot toward the net that deflected off of an Air Force player and went in the net.
The Oilers held that lead and controlled the tempo of the game for the next two periods. Air Force struggled to sustain any offense, but Falcon goalie Peter Foster kept the Falcons alive. Findlay was whistled for five penalties in the final 14 minutes of third period and Air Force capitalized.
Seven seconds after Dave Erickson was called for tripping, Gineo scored his first goal of the game with 4:08 remaining in the third period. His shot from the point was assisted by Brooks Turnquist and Spanky Leonard. Just 53 seconds later, Gineo scored the game-winner, just the third goal of his career. After coincidental penalties were called on AFA's Andrew Ramsey and UF's Kris Wiebe, the teams were skating four-on-four with 3:20 remaining. Five seconds later, Tom Starkey won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Leonard fed Gineo at the point. His one-timer beat UF goalie Jon Horrell high to the far post.
Findlay outshot Air Force in every period and had a 35-22 advantage in the game. The Oilers were 0-for-2 on the power play while AFA was 1-for-7. Horrell made 20 saves for the Oilers while Foster tied his career high with 34.
Air Force steps out of conference play next week as the Falcons host Holy Cross, Feb. 13-14, at the Cadet Ice Arena. The face-off is at 7:05 p.m. each night and both games will be live on KBZC AM 1300 in Colorado Springs and on the internet at www.airforcesports.com as well as on TeamLine.
