USAFA, Colo. -
Senior Matt Herrera (Villa Park, Calif.) scored three goals for the 19th-ranked Falcons, but it was not enough as the Air Force water polo team fell 14-7 to No. 11 Navy Sunday morning at Cadet Natatorium.
The Falcons (1-5) got off to a quick start in the game, as senior Chris Nary (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored just 21 seconds into the contest. However, the Midshipmen (2-4) responded with three goals of their own to take a 3-1 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first period. Air Force senior captain Josh Jewett (La Habra Heights, Calif.) then sailed a long shot past the Navy goalkeeper to put the Falcons back within one point.
After two more Navy scores, Herrera recorded his first goal of the day at the 4:21 mark in the second quarter. The Midshipmen found the net twice more before the end of the period, while the Falcons' Justin Berry (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) scored in the last minute to result in a 7-4 halftime advantage for Navy.
Herrera notched the first goal of the third period with 4:57 on the clock to bring the Falcons back within two points, but they would get no closer as Navy rattled off six unanswered goals. Herrera capped off his three goal performance, all of which came on extra man opportunities, with a score at the 2:57 mark in the final period. Navy recorded its last goal of the contest just 25 seconds later, while Air Force freshman Clark Condict (Irvine, Calif.) got into the scoring column with just six seconds remaining in regulation.
Leading the Midshipmen in the game were senior Patrick Rollo, who tallied six goals, all in the first three periods, and Joe Snelgrove and Alex Ratcliffe with three goals each.
Next on the slate for the Falcons is the Southern Cal Tournament Sept. 18-19, hosted by USC. Air Force will take on the host Trojans, currently ranked number one in the nation, in the opening round at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, followed by a contest with either Loyola Marymount or UC Santa Barbara.
