Los Angeles, Calif. -
In its final game of the weekend, the 18th-ranked Air Force water polo team dropped a close game, 9-7, to No. 15 Pacific in the 13th-place match of the So-Cal Tournament, hosted by the University of Southern California.
In a tournament which included fourteen of the nation's top 20 teams, including all of the top seven, the Falcons (1-8) went up against some formidable opponents. But after a tough game against the second-ranked host Trojans and a narrow loss to No. 11 Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Air Force was ready to take on Pacific in its last game of the tournament.
However it was the Tigers (2-4) who were able to remain on top for most of the game. After taking a 4-3 advantage into halftime, Pacific was able to outscore Air Force, 5-4, in the second half to secure the 9-7 victory.
Leading the way for the Falcons was top scorer Murphey Morgan (Sr., Altamonte Springs, Fla.), who notched a trio of goals. Justin Perkins (Jr., San Carlos, Calif.) added a pair of scores, his first of the season, while Justin Berry (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) and Matt Herrera (Sr., Orange, Calif.) chipped in a goal each. In goal, senior captain Jared Jones (Orange, Calif.) capped off a solid weekend for the Falcons, recording seven saves.
The Tigers were led by Julian Gonzalez, Matt Turnbull and Adam Zobler, who each scored two goals, while Nate Bennett tallied seven saves.
Air Force's varsity squad will get a rest next weekend, as the "B" team hosts the CWPA Tournament Sept. 25-26 at the Cadet Natatorium. The Falcons return to regular action on Oct. 1, when they travel to Pacific for a rematch with the Tigers at 3:00 p.m. (PT). Air Force will then take part in the NorCal Tournament, hosted by Pacific, Oct. 2-3.
