Cross Country Earns a Pair of Third-Place Finishes

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Air Force cross country team opened the 2004 campaign with a pair of third-place finishes at the Cowboy Invitational on Friday, Sept. 3, in Laramie, Wyo. The men tallied 64 points, while the women earned 61, at the Jacoby Golf Course on the campus of the University of Wyoming. With 64 points, Air Force finished behind Colorado State (27 points) and UC-Colorado Springs (43 points), while handily defeating Wyoming (96 points). In the 4.1 men's race, the Falcons were led by senior Kyle Davidson (Houston, Texas), who crossed the finish line in a time of 22.40. Davidson led a quintet of teammates that finished in the top 20, as Jason Beck (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Derek Storbeck (Wayne, N.J.) finished with respective times of 22:49 (13th) and 22:53 (14th) and Nathan Franz (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) and Dan DeRusha (Milford, Mich.) collected times of 23:04 (18th) and 23:13 (19th). Sophomore Richard Elmore (Napa, Calif.) finished in 23:28 for a 26th-place finish, while Josh Van Wyngaarden (La Vista, Neb.) and Ian McFarland (West Plains, Mo.) earned times of 23:36 and 23:52 to finish 26th and 28th. Travis Patterson (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Calvin Glass (Antelope, Calif.) finished with matching times of 24:12 to tie for 33rd-place. Freshman Kenny Grosselin (Ramstein AFB, Germany) posted a 41st-place finish of 24:27, while Cory Pilinko finished 44th, with a time of 24:35. Jordan Hughes and Jared Graham (Blue Springs, Mo.) rounded out the competition with respective times of 24:45 (48th-place) and 25:17 (53rd-place). In the women's 2.5 mile race, Wyoming won the competition with 38 points, while Colorado State finished second with 57 points. Behind Air Force and its 61 points, was UC-Colorado Springs (102 points) and Northern Colorado (104 points). Elizabeth Catherwood (Bethesda, Md.) posted the best finish for the Falcons, crossing the finish line with a fifth-place finish time of 15:18. Margaret Frash (Newburyport, Mass.) and Ashley Culp (West Des Moines, Iowa) matched times of 15:29 to tie for ninth. Ashley Snyder (Pickerington, Ohio) finished 18th, with a time of 15:53, while Andrea Pinchak (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and Vivien Aspden (Yucaipa, Calif.) placed 20th (15:54) and 21st (15:58). Kelly Robinson (Holt, Mich.) placed 24th, with a time of 16:08, while Lindsay Grose (Mission Viejo, Calif.) crossed the finish line in 16:10 for a 27th-place finish. Freshman Kelly Papenberg (Red Lion, Pa.) went 16:16 to finish 30th. Teammate Kristin Trichler (Santa Barbara, Calif.) ran a 16:56 to place 38th, while Kasey Wilson and Cindy Dawson (Yreka, Calif.) collected times of 17:10 (44th) and 17:14 (45th). Candice Killian (17:51-52nd), Katie Suhrhoff (18:17-56th) and Amanda Lopez (18:18-57th) rounded out the competition. The Falcons are off until Sept. 18, when they travel to the Woody Greeno Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
