No. 18 Falcons Drop Two Games At Aggie Shootout

Davis, Calif. -- A day after knocking off No. 17 Santa Clara, the 18th-ranked Air Force water polo team was unable to pull off two more upsets at the Aggie Shootout Sunday, falling to ninth-ranked Pacific, 9-3, and 10th-ranked host UC Davis, 10-3. With just four regular-season contests remaining, the Falcons drop to 9-11 overall with a 7-5 mark in the WWPA.
Perhaps still feeling the effects of Saturday's marathon battle with BYU-Hawaii, the Falcons got out to a slow beginning in the morning game versus Pacific. The Tigers (13-9) rolled out to a 3-0 start by the end of the first quarter, before sophomore Justin Berry (Windermere, Fla.) tallied a pair of quick goals early in the second period to pull Air Force within one. However, another Pacific goal made the score 4-2 at the half.
The Falcons once again cut their deficit to a single goal at the 3:42 mark in the third quarter after junior Danny Kimmich (La Jolla, Calif.) scored on a penalty shot. Unfortunately, it would be the last Air Force score in the game, as the Tigers closed with five straight goals to secure the 9-3 victory.
In the final game of the weekend, the Falcons got out to a strong start against conference rival UC Davis (15-10, 11-1), as senior Jeff Donaldson (Riverside, Calif.) notched a pair of goals in the third minute to put Air Force up 2-0. However, the Aggies began to make their move, tying the game before the end of the first period at 2-2. Solid play on both ends of the pool in the second quarter gave UC Davis a 6-2 cushion at the half.
Air Force's scoring woes would continue after the intermission, as it was kept scoreless by the Aggies well into the fourth period. UC Davis had increased its margin to 10-2--a span of 10 unanswered scores--before the Falcons got back on the board. Junior Blake Pickell (Santa Ana, Calif.) notched the final goal of the game for Air Force, scoring on an extra-man opportunity with less than a minute remaining to make the final tally 10-3.
In both games, Air Force's inability to capitalize on its 6-on-5 opportunities hurt the team. Against Pacific, the Falcons managed to draw 10 ejections, but could only get a score on the penalty shot. Meanwhile, versus UC Davis, Air Force was 1-of-6 in the extra-man situation.
Next weekend, the Falcons head to Southern California for four WWPA contests. After facing Loyola Marymount and Redlands on Saturday, Nov. 5, Air Force will wrap up the weekend Sunday with games at Claremont and LaVerne.
