After one year at the helm of the Air Force men's basketball team, Chris Mooney has resigned and accepted the head coaching position at the University of Richmond, a member of the Atlantic-10 Conference.
Mooney, the fourth-youngest head coach in Division I basketball at the beginning of the 2004-05 season, led the Falcons to an 18-12 record and a 9-5 mark in the Mountain West Conference. Air Force finished third in the conference behind NCAA Tournament qualifiers Utah and New Mexico and fell to San Diego State, 73-68, in the first round of the MWC Championships.
Mooney was an assistant coach with the Falcons for four seasons prior to taking the head coaching job on April 23, 2004, including two seasons as the associate head coach. He was a four-year letterwinner in basketball at Princeton University.
The Falcons return four of their five starters and their top five scorers in 2005-06. Second-team all-Mountain West Conference players Antoine Hood and Nick Welch, both seniors next season, lead the way along with juniors Jacob Burtschi, Matt McCraw and Dan Nwaelele.
A search for a new head coach is underway.
