No. 18 Air Force Drops Two Games At Slugfest

Santa Cruz, Calif. -- The 18th-ranked Air Force water polo team went 0-2 Saturday at the Slugfest, hosted by UC Santa Cruz. The Falcons fell to No. 8 Long Beach State, 11-3, to open the tournament, followed by a tough 7-6 loss to No. 16 Redlands. With the defeats, Air Force drops to 2-3 on the season, 2-1 in WWPA action.
In the first game of the day, Long Beach State jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. While the Falcons were able to put three goals on the board in the second period, the 49ers notched three scores of their own to enter intermission with a 7-3 cushion. Four unanswered goals by Long Beach State in the second half resulted in the final 11-3 tally.
The second game of the afternoon pitted a pair of WWPA opponents against each other as the Falcons took on the 16th-ranked Bulldogs. The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie at the end of the opening period before Redlands began to pull away for a 5-3 halftime lead. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 7-4 by the end of the third period, and while the Falcons were able to hold Redlands scoreless in the final quarter, they could not complete the rally, falling by a margin of 7-6. It marked the third-straight contest--dating back to last season--between the two teams which was decided by a single goal.
The Slugfest wraps up tomorrow, with the Falcons facing WWPA opponents Whittier and Santa Clara at 9:05 a.m. (PT) and 1:25 p.m., respectively.
