Mountain West Conference Names Players of the Week BYU QB Beck, Air Force FS Madrid and Colorado State WR/KR Morton honored
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - John Beck (BYU), Julian Madrid (Air Force) and Damon Morton (Colorado State) are Mountain West Conference Players of the Week for games through Sept. 30. Beck earns Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Madrid garners the Defensive award and Morton receives Special Teams recognition. This is Beck's fifth career weekly honor and second of the season. Madrid and Morton earn weekly awards for the first time.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JOHN BECK, BYU
Senior, Quarterback, Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View
Senior quarterback John Beck completed 23-of-37 passes for a season-high 321 yards and three touchdowns in BYU's 31-17 victory over 15th-ranked TCU in Fort Worth. Beck passed John Walsh (8,390) and Robbie Bosco (8,400) to move into third place on BYU's all-time career passing list.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Julian Madrid, Air force
Senior, Free Safety, San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine
Senior free safety Julian Madrid recorded a season-high eight tackles (five solo), including two sacks for minus eight yards, forced a fumble and recorded an interception in Air Force's 24-7 victory over New Mexico. Madrid forced a fumble on the second play of the game that was recovered by teammate Chris Sutton on the New Mexico 15 yard line. The Falcons scored four plays later to go up 7-0. His interception came with 3:43 remaining in the game in the New Mexico red zone. The Lobos had a second down from the Air Force 18-yard line when Madrid picked off UNM QB Chris Nelson to help seal the victory for the Falcons.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
DAMON Morton, colorado state
Junior, Place Wide Receiver/Kick Returner, Riverside, Calif./John W. North
Junior wide receiver Damon Morton returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the third quarter to give Colorado State a 28-17 lead over Fresno State. Morton also returned two kickoffs for 41 yards in the Rams 35-23 road win.
