Air Force Wins 12th-Straight Service Academy Golf Classic

Roanoke, Texas - With two of its players occupying the top two spots, the Air Force golf team captured the win at the 14th-annual Service Academy Golf Classic, being held at the par-72 Trophy Golf Club Hogan Course. The Falcons, who have now won the Reemtsma Trophy for 12 consecutive years, finished the tournament at 14 over par (1094), 11 strokes ahead of second-place Army.

Air Force was led in the tournament by freshman Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.), who fired a season-low tying round of 66 on Tuesday en route to medalist honors. Whitney, who finished the tournament at 210 (-6), became the first Air Force golfer to win medalist honors at the event since Adam Wasinger in 2002. Meanwhile, senior Tyler Goulding (Tracy, Calif.) posted his best-ever finish at the SAGC, placing second with a three-round score of 215.

Three other Air Force golfers posted top-10 scores, led by sophomore Shaun O'Bryant (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in ninth place at 225. Senior Chad Follett (El Paso, Texas) and sophomore Andrew Gibson (San Ramon, Calif.) each sat a stroke behind in a tie for 10th place at 226.

Rounding out the group for the Falcons were Matt Tanis (Jr., Asbury, N.J.) in 17th place, Jared Freeman (Jr., Brazil, Ind.) tied for 19th place and Bob Whitney (Jr., La Quinta, Calif.) in 20th place in the individual standings.

The Falcons wrap up the 2006 fall season next week, Oct. 30-31, when they head to Las Cruces, N.M., to take part in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
