ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Backed by the underclassmen, the Air Force cross country team concluded the 2006 season at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Saturday, Nov. 11, in Albuquerque, N.M. The men produced an eighth-place finish, while the women finished 13th.
All five of Air Force's scoring runners finished within the top half of the 105-man field, guiding the team to its eighth-place overall finish (15 total teams). Sophomore Matt Williams recorded the best time of the day for Air Force, crossing the finish line in 32:00 to place 35th. Junior Ian McFarland was close on his heels, placing 37th with a time of 32:03. Three Falcons finished in the 43-44-45 positions. Senior Richard Elmore ran the 10k-course in 32:20 to finish 43rd. Sophomore Sean Houseworth finished 44th with a time of 32:24, while junior Josh Van Wyngaarden ran 32:25 to finish 45th. Sophomore Scott Balcao crossed the finish line in 32:51 to take 54th, while junior Kenny Grosselin rounded out the Air Force group with a 72nd finish in 33:31.
On the women's side, Air Force finished 13th of the 17 team field. Freshman Brittany Morreale was the team's top finisher, clocking a time of 23:08 to finish 59th of 119 competitors. Classmate Allison Romanko was close behind, crossing the finish line in 23:11 (61st). Junior Kelly Robinson led a trio of Falcons that finished in the 70th-80th positions. Robinson recorded a time of 23:19 to finish 70th. Freshman Katherine Anderson placed 76th with a time of 23:30, while senior Margaret Frash clocked in at 78th behind a time of 23:32. Junior Kate Papenberg (107th - 24:48) and freshman Sara Juback (116th - 25:25) rounded out the Air Force contingent.
