USAFA, Colo. - A strong home schedule featuring last year's national runner-up, as well as several prestigious road tournaments highlight the 2006 Air Force water polo schedule, as released today by head coach Jeff Ehrlich.
This season's schedule proves to be almost as tough as the 2004 schedule. The Falcons once again open the season at the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, Sept. 2-3. The team will then return home for the next three weekends, first playing host to Navy and Stanford on Sept. 9-10, followed by the East Meets West Tournament, featuring LaVerne, Cal Baptist, Brown and MIT, on Sept. 16-17. Air Force will conclude its home slate on Sept. 23-24, when it hosts UC Davis and California.
After a three-week break, the Falcons return to action on Oct. 14-15 for the SoCal Tournament, hosted by defending national champion, USC. Two weeks later, the team heads to Davis, Calif., for the Aggie Shootout, followed by four WWPA contests on Nov. 4-5, as the Falcons meet up with Loyola Marymount, Redlands, Chapman and Claremont McKenna.
With the regular season under wraps, Air Force will head to the 2006 WWPA Tournament, Nov. 17-19, at Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., where the winner will earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament, hosted by Loyola Marymount, Dec. 2-3.
"We have some outstanding teams coming to the Academy this year," said Ehrlich. "This is the most excited I have been about a schedule."
The Falcons return 17 players from last year's squad, including All-WWPA selection Kyle Schafer and senior captains Danny Kimmich and Blake Pickell, while adding 10 newcomers to the 2006 team.
