Schafer Named MWC Scholar-Athlete

Colorado Springs, Colo. -- A total of 535 student-athletes, including Air Force water polo player Kyle Schafer, were named Mountain West Conference Scholar Athletes for 2005-06, as released by the conference office Tuesday morning. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition for their athletic team.
BYU led the way with 135 student-athletes honored, followed by New Mexico (80), Utah (54) and Wyoming (54), TCU (53), Air Force (52), Colorado State (44), UNLV (35) and San Diego State (28).
Schafer, a native of Irvine, Calif., enters his senior season with a 3.88 GPA in operations research. An academic all-district selection for the 2005-06 season, Schafer, the Falcons' MVP in 2005, was also the lone Air Force player to garner All-WWPA accolades. A starter in all 27 games for a team which was nationally ranked for the majority of the year, Schafer recorded 25 goals and 18 assists in 2005, while also notching 25 steals and winning 93 of 113 sprints (.823). A.three-time AWPCA All-Academic team honoree, Schafer is also a recent addition to the Falcon Club, which recognizes the Air Force water polo team's elite athletes.
