Avery Named MWC Co-Swimmer of the Week

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Air Force junior Bryan Avery was named Mountain West Conference Men's Co-Swimmer of the Week, announced today by the conference office. It marks the first career honor for Avery, and the first of the season for an Air Force swimmer.
Avery, a Mililani, Hawaii, native, led the Falcons to a first-place finish at the Colorado State Early Bird Invitational last weekend in Fort Collins, Colo. He competed in seven total events, including four relay races. Individually, Avery finished first in the 200 individual medley (1:58.83), second in the 100 butterfly (52.60) and eighth in the 200 butterfly (2:04.81). He also helped Air Force to victories in the 400-medley relay (3:28.90), 200-medley relay (1:35.18) and 800-freestyle relay (7:01.07), while the Falcons' 400- freestyle relay team finished second in 3:09.07 with Avery's assistance.
Sharing co-swimmer of the week honors with Avery is Wyoming's Eli Bell. Bell won two individual events and helped two Cowboy relay squads to a first and second place at the Early Bird Invite. He won the 100 freestyle in 46.80, while clocking a time of 1:42.85 in the 200 freestyle. His time in the 200 free currently ranks second in the MWC, while his 100 free time ranks third in the conference. In relay action, he led off for the first-place 400 freestyle squad that turned in a time of 3:08.55 and helped the 800 freestyle team finish second (7:01.81).
Meanwhile, TCU junior R. J. Hesselberg was named men's diver of the week and Wyoming's Aimee Stinson garnered MWC Women's Swimmer of the Week accolades.
Hesselberg swept the diving events at the Early Bird Invite leading the Horned Frogs to a third-place finish. He won the 1-meter dive with a score of 289.20. The following day Hesselberg was victorious in the 3-meter event with a score of 319.65, 33.5 points higher than the next closest competitor.
Stinson won all four events she swam in Fort Collins. Individually, she won the 200 freestyle (1:53.33) and 1650 freestyle (17:46.76), while anchoring the 400 freestyle relay team (3:34.12) and leading off the 800 free quartet (7:47.18) to victories. Stinson's 200 free clocking is the second-best in the league this season.
