Falcons Wrap Up Day One at Nike Cup

Long Beach, Calif. - The Air Force men's and women's swimming teams completed the first day of competition at the UCI/Nike Cup, being held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif. After five events, the men sit in third place, trailing third-ranked Stanford and BYU, while the women are in 11th place.
The men captured third place in the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of T.J. Cowling (Sr., Newport News, Va.), Bryan Avery (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii), Chris Morin (So., Crown Point, Ind.) and Robert Dawson (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) combined for a time of 1:23.67. Meanwhile, the Falcons took fourth place in the 400 medley relay, with Spencer Liedl (Sr., Neenah, Wis.), Justin Day (Jr., Peyton, Colo.), Avery and Cowling turning in a time of 3:24.99.
Sophomore Sean O'Keefe (Lake Oswego, Ore.) was the Falcons' top performer in the 500 free, capturing a time of 4:31.99 to finish seventh. Liedl paced Air Force in the 200 IM, with a mark of 1:52.62 in the prelims before finishing 16th, while Cowling took 12th place in the 50 free after swimming a 21.02 in the preliminaries.
For the women, the 200 free relay team of Katie Brock (Fr., Spring, Texas), Jane Hwang (Jr., Irvine, Calif.), Esther Kim (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Kelly Grabarek (Fr., Laguna Niguel, Calif.) clocked in at 1:39.54 to finish 11th. In the 400 medley relay, Kaeli Kluesner (Fr., Denver, Colo.), Brock, Robbie Nitzberg (Jr., Springfield, Va.) and Grabarek teamed up for a mark of 4:13.16, finishing 15th.
Leading the individuals on the women's side was Hwang, who captured eighth place in the 200 IM after turning in a mark of 2:06.05 in the prelims.
The Nike Cup continues Friday and will conclude on Saturday.
