Air Force Concludes Second Day at Nike Open

Long Beach, Calif. - With two days of competition under wraps, the Air Force men's and women's swimming teams remain in third and 11th place, respectively, at the UCI/Nike Cup, being held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif. The men have 567 points to trail third-ranked Stanford and BYU, while the women have 144 points after two days.
The men's top finish of the day came in the 800 freestyle relay, where the team of Benjamin Gunn (Fr., Gainesville, Ga.), Sean O'Keefe (So., Lake Oswego, Ore.), T.J. Cowling (Sr., Newport News, Va.) and Bryan Avery (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) placed second with a time of 6:46.36. Meanwhile, the Falcons finished fourth in the 200 medley relay, with the team of Kai Yamashiro (Jr., Kaneohe, Hawaii), Justin Day (Jr., Peyton, Colo.), Chris Morin (So., Crown Point, Ind.) and Cowling posting a time of 1:33.36.
The top individual finish for the Air Force men came from Yamashiro, who placed fifth in the 100 backstroke after recording a time of 51.84 in the preliminaries. Senior Spencer Liedl (Neenah, Wis.), who recorded a mark of 4:07.96 in the preliminaries of the 400 IM, led the Falcons in that event, finishing seventh.
Junior Bryan Avery (Miliani, Hawaii) had a pair of top-10 finishes, placing sixth in the 200 free after turning in a time of 1:40.25 in the prelims and placing eighth in the 100 butterfly, clocking a time of 49.75 in the finals. Also notching a top-10 time in the 200 free was sophomore Sean O'Keefe (Lake Oswego, Ore.), who posted a mark of 1:40.81 in the preliminaries. Meanwhile, Day captured 10th place in the 100 breaststroke, recording a time of 56.25 in the finals.
On the women's side, the 800 free team of Jane Hwang (Jr., Irvine, Calif.), Jessica Rodgers, Kelly Grabarek (Fr., Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Kaeli Kluesner (Fr., Denver, Colo.) finished 11th with a mark of 7:55.37. Meanwhile, the 200 medley relay team of Katelyn Hunter (So., La Crescent, Minn.), Hwang, Rodgers and Katie Brock (Fr., Spring, Texas) took 14th place with a time of 1:52.11.
Leading the individuals on the women's side was Hwang, who finished 15th in the 100 butterfly, recording a time of 1:07.16, while Rodgers placed 16th in the 100 fly after clocking a time of 58.31 in the prelims.
The Nike Cup concludes on Saturday.
