USAFA, Colo. - Unable to overcome a 5-0 deficit, the fifth-seeded Air Force water polo team fell to top-seed UC Davis, 13-6, Saturday in the semifinals of the Western Water Polo Association Championship, hosted by the Falcons.
UC Davis led 5-0 in the second period before a score from junior Kevin Williams (River Forest, Ill.) put the Falcons on the board for the first time with just over a minute remaining in the opening half. The two teams traded goals in the final minute to give the Aggies a 6-2 halftime advantage.
The Aggies extended their lead in the third period, as the Falcons were never able to get closer than four goals. Goalkeeper Mike McGee was clutch for UC Davis, credited with 11 stops, while the Aggie offense got balanced scoring, with four players notching two goals each.
For the Falcons, Williams led the offense with a pair of scores, while Tyler Hewko (Jr., Laguna Hills, Calif.), Clark Condict (Sr., Irvine, Calif.), Justin Berry (Sr., Windermere, Fla.) and Alex Churnside (So., Orange, Calif.) added the other Air Force goals.
Air Force will now face second-seed Santa Clara in the third-place game, slated for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Meanwhile, UC Davis, which remains undefeated against WWPA teams this season, will move onto the championship game against third-seed Loyola Marymount.
