Matt Williams Concludes Run at NCAA Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Air Force junior Matt Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo.) clocked a time of 31:25.0 to finish near the top half of the field at the 2007 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Monday, Nov. 19. Competing at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind., Williams finished 136th in his first-ever national appearance.
Williams' time is the second-fastest 10,000-meter time of his career and the best time by an Air Force runner at the NCAA Championships since 2003. In fact, since 1995, only eight Air Force athletes have collected a faster time (and six of those came from the 2003 squad that finished eighth).
He was the fifth-fastest runner from the Mountain West Conference, finishing behind conference champion Jeremy Johnson and a trio of BYU athletes. Contributing to Williams' overall time were splits of 9:09 (3k), 15:35 (5k) and 25:05 (8k).
Liberty's Josh McDougal and Oregon's Galen Rupp distanced themselves from the rest of the 250-member field to take the top two spots. Although just one second separated the two runners, McDougal and Rupp clocked more than a 22 second advantage over the third-place finisher. Oregon (85 points) claimed its first team title since 1977, while Iona finished second with 113 points.
