USAFA, Colo. - Air Force riflist Justin Raines and water polo player Kyle Schafer were both named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® University Division Men's At-Large All-District VII Team as selected by CoSIDA and released Thursday morning. The 11 student-athletes selected to the first team advance to the national Academic All-America ballot.
The 11 student-athletes selected to the District VII first team represent the sports of gymnastics, ice hockey, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. Seven seniors, three juniors and a sophomore comprise this year's men's at-large all-district team, while the combined grade-point average of this year's team is 3.82. Four of this year's honorees, including Schafer, are repeat selections to the all-district team.
Raines, a junior from Knoxville, Tenn., earns his first academic all-district honors this season. The systems engineering management major has compiled a 3.86 GPA over his first three years at the Academy. A first-team member of the Falcons' nationally ranked air rifle team, Raines ranked 79th nationally in 2007 and shot a personal best 583 this season. Raines is a two-time CRCA All-Academic selection and was named a Dean's Academic Ace for compiling a 4.0 semester GPA. In addition, he has been selected to serve in a 2007 Summer Research Program in Washington, D.C.
Schafer, a senior from Irvine, Calif., earns his second academic all-district recognition. An operations research major, Schafer holds a 3.89 GPA. The Falcons' team MVP for the 2005 season, Schafer was a two-time All-Western Water Polo Association selection. A starter in all 31 games for a team which finished the season ranked 17th nationally, Schafer led the team with 58 points (38 goals, 20 assists) in 2007 and ended his career by winning 180 of 235 sprints (.766). In addition to earning an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Schafer was also named a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. A four-time AWPCA All-Academic team honoree, Schafer is one of just eight members of the Falcon Club, which recognizes the Air Force water polo team's elite athletes.
