USAFA, Colo. - The 16th-ranked Air Force water polo captured second place at its own East Meets West Tournament Sunday, defeating No. 19 Cal Baptist before dropping the championship game to No. 15 Pacific. The Falcons picked up an 18-12 victory over the Lancers to open the day, while falling to the Tigers, 11-7. Air Force now stands at 6-9 on the season.
The Falcons opened the morning with a contest versus Cal Baptist. While Air Force tallied the first goal of the game, the Lancers went on a run to earn a 5-2 advantage after one period. The Falcons began to chip away at CBU's advantage, eventually tying the score at 6-6 midway through the second quarter. Air Force went on to record the next six goals in the contest to seize control of the game, leading by as many as eight in the eventual 18-12 victory.
Against the Lancers, senior Justin Berry (Windermere, Fla.) paced the Falcons with five goals, Kevin Williams (Jr., River Forest, Ill.) tallied four scores and Alex Churnside (So., Orange, Calif.) added three goals. With the win over Cal Baptist, the Falcons moved into the championship game for a rematch with Pacific. While the game was tied 2-2 early in the contest, the Tigers closed out the opening half on a 4-0 scoring run. Air Force began to make a comeback in the third period, cutting its deficit to two goals, but Pacific came right back, leading by five before taking the 11-7 victory. Berry, Condict and Tyler Hewko (Jr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) each notched two goals in the loss for the Falcons, while senior Damon Jones (Kaneohe, Hawaii) added the last Air Force score.
At the conclusion of the championship game, the all-tournament team was announced, with Berry and Condict representing the Falcons.
