USAFA, Colo. - Led by four goals from senior captain Justin Berry, the 18th-ranked Air Force water polo team opened up the weekend with a 12-6 victory over Johns Hopkins Friday at the Cadet Natatorium. The Falcons improve to 2-3 on the season with the win, while the Blue Jays fall to 1-4.
Berry (Windermere, Fla.) started out the scoring for the Falcons, capitalizing on a man-up opportunity less than a minute into the game. However, the Blue Jays came right back, scoring just 15 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1. Following two more Air Force goals, Johns Hopkins notched the final goal of the opening period to bring the score to 3-2.
The second quarter started out quickly for Air Force, with senior captain Clark Condict (Irvine, Calif.) tallying his second score of the game just 17 seconds into the period. Shutting out the Blue Jays in the second stanza, the Falcons took a 5-2 lead into the intermission.
Air Force continued its streak into the third period, scoring four more unanswered goals before Johns Hopkins was able to get back on the scoreboard. Leading 9-3 at the beginning of the final quarter, the Falcons grabbed their largest advantage of the contest with 3:52 remaining, leading 12-3. Although the Blue Jays scored three unanswered to end the contest, Air Force was able to cruise to the 12-6 victory.
In addition to Berry's four goals, Condict added three scores, while Alex Churnside (So., Orange, Calif.), Kevin Williams (Jr., River Forest, Ill.), Jack Hines (So., Riverside, Calif.), Tyler Hewko (Jr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) and Bobby Geiger (Fr., Buellton, Calif.) completed the scoring for Air Force.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow, Sept. 8, with two more games against Johns Hopkins. The teams will open the day at 10:00 a.m. and wrap up the weekend with a 5:00 p.m. contest.
