COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Senior Scott Balcao and freshman Phaelen French, of the Air Force cross country team, were named the Mountain West Conference Runners of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon (Oct. 28). Balcao becomes just the third Falcon to earn more than one weekly award in his career, as he also received the honor in 2006. This is the first such honor for French.
In his final collegiate meet, Balcao was the top scoring Falcon at the Air Force Open on Friday, Oct. 24. Contributing to a career-best second-place finish, Balcao crossed the finish line of the race at the Eisenhower Golf Course in an 8K time of 26:52. On the women's side, French paced the squad with a third-place finish overall. The second-fastest collegian in the 6K competition, French clocked a time of 25:42 and was one of three Falcons to finish within the top five.
Balcao and French are the third and fourth Falcons, respectively, to be named a conference runner of the week this season, joining junior Brittany Morreale (Sept. 16) and senior Sebastian Ortiz (Oct. 14). The four Falcons to be honored by the MWC this year are tied for the most ever in a single season, matching the total first set in 2004.
The Falcons return to action this Saturday (Nov. 1), when they travel to San Diego, Calif., for the 2008 Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships at Mission Bay Park. Action is slated to begin at 10 a.m. (PST), with the women's 6K race, with the men's 8K race following at 11 a.m.
