LOS ANGELES, Calif. - In its final weekend of the regular season, the Air Force water polo team split a pair of conference games Saturday at Loyola Marymount's Burns Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Falcons dropped a 16-6 contest to No. 6 LMU before defeating Chapman, 8-4. Air Force now moves to 13-13 overall on the season and 8-5 in the Western Water Polo Association.
In its contest against Loyola Marymount, Air Force got on the board first with a man-up goal by senior Tyler Hewko (Laguna Hills, Calif.). However, the Lions outscored the Falcons 4-1 for the rest of the period to take a two-goal advantage. Hewko scored again early in the second quarter to bring Air Force back within one goal, but LMU still held a 7-5 advantage at the half.
The Falcons were unable to keep the game close for long, as LMU scored nine second-half goals and limited Air Force to just one, a score from senior captain Kevin Williams (River Forest, Ill.).
Hewko led the Falcons with three goals against the Lions, while Jack Hines (Jr., Riverside, Calif.), Bobby Geiger (So., Buellton, Calif.) and Williams added one score each.
Air Force rebounded in its second game of the day, with a win over Chapman. The first period was a defensive struggle, with neither team getting on the board. The Falcons finally scored the first goal of the game at the 6:20 mark in the second period, as sophomore Kurt Wallin (Temecula,Calif.) capitalized on a man-up opportunity. The rest of the quarter remained scoreless until Geiger notched his first goal of the game with 27 seconds left on the clock.
Both teams scored two goals each in the third period, leaving Air Force with a 4-2 advantage going into the final period. The Panthers cut their deficit back to a single goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but the Falcons rattled off three straight goals before taking the 8-4 victory.
Geiger was the leading scorer for Air Force against Chapman with four goals, while Wallin and Hewko added two scores each.
The Falcons conclude the regular season tomorrow with a pair of road conference games, taking on La Verne at 9:00 a.m. (PT) and Claremont at 1:00 p.m.
