Falcons Go Undefeated at Mesa State Invitational

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Winning 10 of 14 events, the Air Force women's swimming team went 3-0 at the Mesa State Invitational, picking up victories over Mesa State, Colorado College and Grand Canyon University. The Falcons defeated the host Mavericks, 161-101, while defeating Colorado College, 218-42, and Grand Canyon, 224-20. Air Force, which now holds a 4-8 record on the season, also defeated Colorado's club team, 216.5-44.5.
Seniors Jane Hwang (Irvine, Calif.) and Laken Stogner (Bowdon, Ga.) led the Falcons with two individual wins each. Hwang took first in the 100-meter backstroke with a mark of 1:09.61 and in the 400 freestyle, clocking in at 4:42.36. Meanwhile, Stogner was the top competitor in the 200 free, recording a time of 2:14.73, while also taking first in the 100 free, with a mark of 1:00.56.
Finishing right behind Stogner in the 100 free were freshman Alison Ceranski (Marinette, Wis.) and Lauren Delaney (Panama City, Fla.), who finished second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, Julie Grabarek (Fr., Laguna Niguel, Calif.) helped the Falcons acheive a 1-2 sweep in the 400 free, placing second with a time of 4:50.33.
The Falcons took the top three spots in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events. In the 100 fly, Katharine Ernst (Fr., Folsom, Calif.) took first place, clocking in at 1:09.70, followed by Becky Gleason (Jr., Ballwin, Mo.) and Katelyn Hunter (Jr., La Crescent, Minn.) in second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, Betsy Scarberry (So., Fairborn, Ohio) was the top finisher in the 200 fly, registering a time of 2:34.28, while Elvira Chiccarelli (Fr., Panama City Beach, Calif.) and Kaeli Kluesner (So., Denver, Colo.) took second and third place in the event.
Kluesner added a first-place showing in the 800 free, registering a mark of 9:50.46, while sophomore Caitlin Teresky (Newtown, Pa.) finished third in the event. Cassie Fletcher (Fr., Durham, N.C.) added the final top individual finish for the Falcons, winning the 50 freestyle with a mark of 28.15.
Air Force also had two top-three finishes in the 200 back, with Gleason placing second with a mark of 2:32.37, followed by Rachel Reeder (Fr., St. Thomas, Pa.) in third place. In addition, Ernst placed second in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:37.50.
In the 200 medley relay, the Falcons finished first and second, led by the team of Hunter, Hwang, Ernst and Esther Kim (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) in a time of 2:08.19. Air Force also had the top-two finishes in the 200 freestyle relay, with the team of Hwang, Fletcher, Kim, and Hunter touching in a time of 1:52.65.
The Falcons open up conference action this week, Nov. 13, when they host TCU in the first home meet of the season. The meet is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Cadet Natatorium.
