Air Force Fencers Competed in North American Cup

The Academy's fencers competed at the North American Cup "C" Division I Tournament this past weekend at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Dec. 12-14. Finishing in the top 20, junior Peter French, Austin, Texas, tied for 11th place in men's individual epee among 196 competitors. In the top 25 of women's individual epee, freshman Simone Barrette, from Louisville, Ky., finished 26th in the field of 87 fencers. Also in epee, sophomore Daniel Trapani, Houston, Texas, finished in 37th place.
"This was very good results for Peter and Simone," said head coach Abdel Salem. "Daniel's result was a disappointment for him, especially for the caliber of fencer he is."
In men's foil, sophomore Nick Stockdale, Lansdowne, Pa., finished 62nd, while freshman Phil Choy, Basking Ridge, N.J., finished 84th in the field of 116 fencers.
Junior Michael O'Connor, Charlotte, N.C., competed in men's sabre, he finished 42nd among 80 competitors.
Following the winter break, the Academy's fencing team will resume competition on Jan. 16-19 at the NAC "D" in Louisville, Ky. The team will host the annual Falcon Open, Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at the USAFA Cadet Gymnasium.
