Falcons Fall to Wyoming in Final Regular Season Meet

Laramie, Wyo. - In the final dual meet of the season, the Air Force men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Wyoming Saturday afternoon. The men dropped a 175-123 decision to the Cowboys, while the women lost to the Cowgirls, 166-107. The men fall to 4-7 on the season, 1-4 in the MWC, while the women drop to 2-11, 0-8 in the conference.
The men's swimmers captured four first-place finishes on the day. The Falcons finished first in the 200 medley relay, with the team of Kai Yamashiro (Jr., Kaneohe, Hawaii), Justin Day (Jr., Peyton, Colo.), Chris Morin (So., Crown Point, Ind.) and T.J. Cowling (Sr., Newport News, Va.) leading the way with a mark of 1:34.23. Air Force also took second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Yamashiro captured a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 51.74, while taking second in the 200 back. Day took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.68, just one one-hundredth of a second in front of the runner-up. Also winning an event for the Falcons was sophomore Sean O'Keefe (Lake Oswego, Ore.), who finished first in the 500 free with a mark of 4:49.40, just ahead of teammate Marcus Poehler (Fr., Phoenix, Ariz.), who recorded a time of 4:50.77.
Junior Bryan Avery (Mililani, Hawaii) added a pair of runner-up finishes, coming in second in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events. In the 200 butterfly, freshmen Benjamin Gunn (Gainesville, Ga.) and Karl Mohrmann (Lake Forest, Ill.) came in second and third, respectively, with Mohrmann recording a season-best mark of 1:57.14. Meanwhile, in the 50 free, Robert Dawson (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) took second place, followed by Cowling in third place.
For the divers, Kyle Van Valkenburg (So., Tucson, Ariz.) was the Falcons' top performer, finishing second in the 1-meter dive with a season-best 306.82, while taking third place at 3-meters.
On the women's side, the team of Katie Brock (Fr., Spring, Texas), Jane Hwang (Jr., Irvine, Calif.), Katelyn Hunter (So., La Crescent, Minn.) and Kelly Grabarek (Fr., Laguna Niguel, Calif.) finished second in the 400 free relay.
Hwang captured the lone first-place finish for the Air Force women, winning the 100 freestyle. Following Hwang in the event was team captain Kallyn Johnson (Sr., Enid, Okla.), who took second. Hwang also finished second in both the 200 free and the 100 butterfly.
Finishing third in the 1000 freestyle was Caitlin Teresky (Fr., Newtown, Pa.). Becky Gleason (So., Ballwin, Mo.) was third in the 200 fly, while Betsy Scarberry (Fr., Fairborn, Ohio) came in third in the 500 free.
With the regular season complete, the Falcons have a few weeks off before returning to action at the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships, being held Feb. 27-March 1 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
