The Air Force men's tennis team wrapped up its 2007-08 season Thursday with a 4-0 loss to New Mexico in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Championships at Fort Worth, Texas. With the victory, UNM (18-8) will play San Diego State in the semifinals, while the Falcons finished the season with a 10-15 record.
In doubles, UNM took the point by shutting out Air Force at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Johnny Parkes and Chris Parkes started things off with an 8-0 victory over sophomore Austin Francis and freshman Alex Beaussart at the No. 2 position, while at No. 3, Graeme Kassautzki and Joe Wood defeated seniors Greg Ferry and Harrison Maloy, 8-0, in their final match with the Falcons. Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski were leading sophomore Brett Rodgers and freshman Taylor Soster, 5-1, at the top spot when the match was halted.
In singles, Pajkowski played at No. 6 and delivered a 6-1, 6-1 victory over junior Kyle Epperson, giving the Lobos a 2-0 lead. Jones made it 3-0 by winning the No. 1 match, 6-0, 6-2, against Rodgers and Kassautzki clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot against Soster. The other three matches were halted at that time.
Air Force kept its streak alive this season of winning at least 10 matches in every year of head coach Rich Gugat's tenure. Gugat, who has a career record of 723-250 in 34 seasons as head coach, is still No. 2 on the list for career wins by active Division I coaches.
