Air Force Opens 2008 Season at Wyoming Invitational

The Air Force cross country team ushers in the 2008 campaign at the annual University of Wyoming Cross Country Invitational on Friday (Aug. 29). Action will take place at the Jacoby Golf Course in Laramie, Wyo., and begin at 6:00 p.m., with the women's race.
ABOUT THE MEET
The collegiate portion of the annual Wyoming Invitational will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the women's 2.5-mile race. The men's 4.25-mile event will start at 6:30 p.m. The race, which is held at the Jacoby Golf Course, features flat to rolling grass fairways, with some dirt trails.

FOUR OUTTA FIVE AIN'T BAD
Air Force runners hold four of the five fastest all-time marks at the 4.25-mile Wyoming Invitational. Senior Sean Houseworth holds the second-fastest time of 22:07, which he set last year. Classmate Matt Williams' 2006 winning time of 22:12 is tied with former Falcon Nick Wilson (2005) as the fourth-best time in the history of the meet, while recent graduate Ian McFarland's 2007 time of 22:13 is tied for fifth. In all, Air Force boasts nine of the 17 fastest times at that meet.
2008 CAPTAINS
Seniors Sean Houseworth and Matt Williams were selected as co-captains for the men's team, while juniors Brittany Morreale and Ally Romanko will share the captaincy duties for the women's team.
MEN PICKED THIRD; WOMEN SIXTH
The men's cross country team was chosen to finish third at the MWC Championships, according to the league's head coaches. On the women's side, the Falcons were ranked sixth in the preseason poll.
COACHING QUICK HITS
Second-year head coach John Hayes spent the summer coaching Lopez Lomong to a semifinal berth in the 1500-meter run at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing...Air Force added Lt Col Steve Cowles as an assistant coach for the Falcons' program. It is the second season that Cowles has worked with the cross country team, as he worked as a volunteer coach last year.
WELCOME TO THE SHOW
The Falcons welcomed 15 freshmen to the program in 2008, including nine men and five women. Matthew Cain, Ryan Del Grosso, Jacob Fulton, Zachary Marx, Jonathan Rock, James Walmsley, Chase Welch, Nick White and Alex Zubey joined the men's program, while Katherine Carroll, Auriele Fain, Phaelen French, Meghan Prinkey, Alexa Ramsier and Elyse Willard joined the women's team. Air Force also added senior Brad Chronister, junior Becca Burditt and junior Katie Lynch to the team.
