USAFA, Colo. - With just two wins on the night, the Air Force wrestling team opened its 2008-09 home slate with a 32-7 loss to Stanford. The Falcons fall to 1-6 on the season, while the Cardinal moves to 4-10-1 on the year.
Air Force got out to a solid start in the match, with a win by sophomore Andrew Zwirlein at 125 pounds. Zwirlein found himself trailing 5-0 after the first period of action, but rattled off six unanswered points against Matt Sencenbaugh in the second period to take the lead. Zwirlein's lead grew to two points following a stall warning against Sencenbaugh early in the third period, but a Sencenbaugh-escape with just 17 seconds remaining cut the margin back to 7-6. However, Zwirlein was able to solidify his victory with a takedown just before the final buzzer, winning the 9-6 decision.
Following the Falcons' early 3-0 lead, Stanford began its run, scoring major decisions at 133 and 141 pounds, followed by a technical fall at 149 pounds. The Cardinal registered another major decision at 157 pounds, while Air Force senior captain Stephen Crozier (Monona, Iowa) had his five-match winning streak come to an end in the 165-pound bout, dropping a 6-2 decision.
Things began to look up with the match-up at 174 pounds, as junior Tyler French (Malta, Mont.) put together a strong performance for the Falcons. French, who scored six takedowns in his bout, registered a 16-7 major decision over Victor Haug, to give Air Force its second individual win of the match.
Unfortunately, Air Force was unable to score another victory, dropping decisions in both the 184-pound and heavyweight matches. In addition, Stanford's Luke Feist registered his team-leading ninth fall of the year in the 197-pound bout, giving the Cardinal a 32-7 team victory.
Air Force is back in action tomorrow night for its conference opener against 22nd-ranked Northern Iowa. The dual is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Clune Arena.
