Falcons Conclude Opening Day at Toshiba Classic

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Led by a top-five finish from junior Benjamin Gunn (Gainesville, Ga.), the Air Force men's swimming team completed the first day of action at the Toshiba Classic, hosted by UC San Diego at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
The Falcons' best individual finish of the day came from Gunn, who scored a fifth-place showing in the 200 IM after clocking a time of 1:50.67 in the finals. Meanwhile, classmate Josh Hammervold (Sugar Land, Texas) placed one spot behind, posting a career-best mark of 1:52.04 in the preliminaries. Eric Robinson (Jr., Lakewood, Colo.) took 18th place with a finals time of 1:53.96, followed by Chris Morin (Sr., Crown Point, Ind.) in 19th place with a mark of 1:54.15, while freshman Mark Hansen (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) added a 22nd-place showing in the event.
Senior Sean O'Keefe (Lake Oswego, Ore.) placed eighth in the 500 freestyle after clocking a time of 4:29.59 in the preliminaries, while Tom Hansen (Jr., Berkeley Heights, N.J.) finished 12th in the event following his preliminary mark of 4:32.04. Corydon Butler (So., Williamsburg, Va.) won his consolation heat of the 500 free with a mark of 4:30.96, placing 17th overall. Also scoring for the Falcons in the event were freshmen Jon Jones (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and J.H. Vivadelli (Richmond, Va.) in 22nd and 29th place, respectively.
In the final individual event of the day, sophomore Cole Smith (Charlotte, N.C.) was the lone scorer for the Falcons, placing 32nd with a preliminary mark of 21.80.
Meanwhile, the 400 medley relay team of Morin, Hammervold, Gunn and O'Keefe captured fourth place, clocking a time of 3:22.78.
The second day of competition at the Toshiba Classic is slated to begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. (PT).
