Air Force Men Finish Third at Toshiba Classic

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Registering seven top-eight finishes on the final day of action, the Air Force men's swimming team placed third at the Toshiba Classic, hosted by UC San Diego at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. The Falcons finished with 908 points to place behind only second-ranked Stanford (2002.5) and Hawaii (1109), while placing ahead of conference foes Utah and BYU.
The top overall finish for the Falcons came in the 400 medley relay, where the team of Benjamin Gunn (Jr., Gainesville, Ga.), Sean O'Keefe (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.), Chris Morin (Sr., Crown Point, Ind.) and Jon Jones (Fr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) clocked a time of 3:04.14.
A pair of juniors led the Air Force individuals with fourth-place finishes in their respective events. Josh Hammervold (Sugar Land, Texas) took fourth place in the 200 breaststroke with a mark of 2:02.98. Meanwhile, Gunn placed fourth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:47.20, a mark which ranks as the fourth-fastest in Academy history.
Also in the 200 back, Tom Hansen (Jr., Berkeley Heights, N.J.) added a seventh-place showing after clocking a time of 1:50.13 in the preliminaries, while freshmen Paul Young (Lakeville, Minn.) and Matt Millikin (Pittsburgh, Pa.) placed ninth and 15th overall, respectively. Meanwhile, in the 200 breaststroke, Cody Deacon (So., Portland, Ore.) finished 12th, followed by Greg Edmonds (Sr., Fairfax Station, Va.) in 14th place.
O'Keefe led the Falcons in the 1650 freestyle, placing fifth with a time of 15.40.92. In addition, Corydon Butler (Williamsburg, Va.) finished eighth in the event, recording a mark of 15:47.99.
Also recording a top-eight finish on Saturday was junior Eric Robinson (Lakewood, Colo.), who turned in a time of 1:51.82 in the preliminaries of the 200 butterfly before finishing eighth in the event. Freshman Mark Hansen (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) also placed in the top 16 of the 200 fly, finishing 14th overall.
The top finisher for Air Force in the 100 freestyle was freshman Anthony Chiaro (Tucson, Ariz.), who claimed 27th place overall after swimming a time of 47.63. Meanwhile, Morin posted the Falcons' top time in the event, registering a preliminary mark of 46.82, but did not swim in the finals.
The Falcons are off for the rest of the semester, but will return to action on Jan. 2 when they take part in the Florida International Relays as part of their winter training.
