Air Force Women Conclude Day Two at Cougar Classic

HOUSTON, Texas - Turning in several career- and season-best marks on Saturday, the Air Force women's swimming team wrapped up the second day of action at the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational, hosted by Houston at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC). Following two days of competition, the Falcons are in seventh place in the team standings with 84 points.
Senior Becky Gleason (Ballwin, Mo.) was the top individual finisher for the Falcons on Saturday, placing 15th in the `B' final of the 400 IM after posting a season-best mark of 4:38.22 in the preliminaries. Haley Holcombe (Fr., Snellville, Ga.) also advanced to the `B' final in the event with a preliminary time of 4:37.12.
Rosie Mayou (Fr., Derby, Kan.) advanced to the `B' final in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:08.42 in, while classmate Katrina Castellanos (Roseville, Calif.) finished first in the `C' final with a time of 1:08.11.
In the 100 butterfly, two Air Force swimmers advanced to the `C' final. Sophomore Katharine Ernst (Folsom, Calif.) placed second in her heat and 18th overall with a career-best time of 58.17, while Holcombe finished 21st overall after clocking a preliminary time of 58.69.
Four Falcons moved on to the `D' final in the 200 freestyle, with Rachel Roberts (Fr., Eagle River, Alaska) registering the best overall finish, placing 18th with a mark of 2:00.12. Meanwhile, Alexandra Trobe (Fr., Pittsford, N.Y.) clocked a time of 1:59.34 in the prelims, while Lauren Delaney (So., Panama City, Fla.) and Shelby Schaefer (Fr., Roseville, Calif.) also advanced to the `D' final based on their preliminary marks.
There were also four Air Force swimmers who competed in the `D' final of the 100 backstroke. Junior Kaeli Kluesner (Denver, Colo.), who finished 27th overall, led the way, posting a career-best mark of 1:01.16 in the prelims. Schaefer finished one spot back with a time of 1:01.70, while Katelyn Hunter (Sr., La Crescent, Minn.) and Elvira Chiccarelli (So., Panama City Beach, Fla.) also moved on the `D' finals.
The Falcons finished 14th in both relay events on Saturday, with the team of Hunter, Castellanos, Holcombe and Cassie Fletcher (So., Durham, N.C.) clocking a time of 1:52.49 in the 200 medley relay, while Holcombe, Delaney, Roberts and Trobe combined for a mark of 8:05.15 in the 800 freestyle relay.
The final day of competition at the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational is slated to begin tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. (CT).
