CORVALLIS, Ore. -
Despite two wins by freshman Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.), the Air Force wrestling team dropped a pair of non-conference duals Friday evening at Crescent Valley High School. The Falcons fell to Southern Oregon, 20-16, in their first match of the evening, before suffering a 43-3 loss to 25th-ranked Oregon State.
Air Force (1-3) opened the evening against Southern Oregon (5-3), which is currently ranked fifth in the NAIA. The Raiders got out to a quick 9-0 lead in the team scoring with wins at 125 and 133 pounds, before VonOhlen put the Falcons on the board, posting an 18-6 major decision against Barry Jacobs at 141 pounds.
Southern Oregon regained its nine-point advantage with a major decision in the 149-lb. match, while Wade Stowe (Jr., The Colony, Texas) added three points to the Falcons' team score with a decision over Tomas Rojas at 157 pounds. Stowe scored a takedown with 20 seconds left in regulation to take a 4-3 decision and put the Falcons back on the scoreboard. However, the Raiders registered another victory at 165 pounds to take a 16-7 lead.
Air Force went on to win three of the final four bouts against Southern Oregon. Tyler French (Sr., Malta, Mont.) dominated the first two periods in his match versus Austin Vanderford at 174 pounds, before holding on for a 9-6 decision. At 197 pounds, Neil Delaney (Jr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored the lone point in the third period to escape with a 3-2 decision over Ron Lee, while heavyweight Stephen Larson (Lakeville, Minn.) earned a 5-2 decision against John Harrison. However, the three wins were not enough to give Air Force the edge in a close 20-16 loss.
Against the Beavers (8-1), who feature five nationally ranked wrestlers in their lineup, VonOhlen registered the lone Air Force victory. VonOhlen took a 3-0 lead after two periods of action against Mike Mangrum in the 141-lb. bout, before securing the 8-5 decision to give the Falcons three points in the team scoring.
The Falcons will return to action Dec. 29-30 at the annual Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C.
