After a five-hour delay due to power outages at the Air Force Academy, the AFA men's tennis team won its first match of the season Saturday, defeating Idaho State, 4-0. Air Force improved to 1-7, while ISU fell to 0-5 this spring.
Thanks to freezing temperatures late Friday night into Saturday morning, the Academy's fieldhouse and cadet gymnasium, home to the indoor tennis courts, experienced intermittent power outages Saturday. The match, originally scheduled for 12 p.m., finally began around 5 p.m.
The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead with wins at the top two doubles spots. Junior Austin Francis and freshman Cody Hall defeated Javier Royo and Ross DeChant, 8-3, while junior Brett Rodgers and sophomore Taylor Soster won at No. 2 by the same score. The No. 3 match was then pulled off the court.
In singles, Francis won at the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Royo, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Soster followed suit by defeating DeChant by the same score at the No. 4 position and Hall clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Danel Barrenechea at No. 2.
The No. 3 match was pulled off the court in the second set and the Nos. 5 and 6 matches were called off.
The Falcons are idle until Sunday, Feb. 22, when they take on Weber State at 12 p.m.
