The Air Force men's tennis team won the doubles point but dropped five of the six singles matches Thursday and lost 5-2 to Xavier University at the Academy. The Falcons fell to 2-10 this season, while Xavier improved to 9-4.
Air Force took a 1-0 lead with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Junior Brett Rodgers and sophomore Taylor Soster improved to 9-2 with an 8-4 victory over Bobby Deye and JT Torbeck, while sophomore Johnny Buckingham and freshman Will Brown pulled out an exciting 9-8 victory over Anthony Palmenter and Brian Starr, winning the tiebreak, 7-3. It was Brown's first collegiate dual match victory.
Unfortunately, the Musketeers took over the match in singles play, as they won the first four matches, all in straight sets, to clinch the team match. Buckingham was the only Falcon to win a singles match, rallying to beat Torbeck, 1-6, 7-6(3), and 11-9 in the third-set super tiebreak.
The Falcons host Colorado College on Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m.
