COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force seniors Nick Frawley (Midlothian, Texas) and Sara Neubauer (Bottineau, N.D.) were selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced today (Jan. 19). The pair earned the awards based on their stellar performances at the season-opening Air Force All-Comers Meet on Jan. 15.
This is the third overall weekly conference award for Frawley, who earned Athlete of the Week honors as a junior during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. It is the first time Neubauer has earned the award during the indoor season, although she did claim the honor during the outdoor season as a freshman.
Frawley was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault and tied for the top overall spot, clearing the bar at 17'7". That height, a NCAA Provisional Mark, is the top mark in the conference and tied for the fifth-highest clearance in the nation.
Neubauer used Academy record-setting performances to easily win both the shot put and weight throw. Recording a distance of 58'8", Neubauer broke the 2007 standard in that event, posted the second-best mark in the conference to-date and moved into the national rankings at No. 31. She went one to break her own Academy standard in the shot put with a NCAA Provisional Mark of 50'8". That mark, which bettered the field of 24 by nearly 10 feet, tops the conference and is tied for 16th nationally.
This is the just the second time that Air Force has swept the league's weekly awards. In 2005, former Falcons Paul Gensic and Olivia Korte shared the weekly awards during the outdoor season.
Air Force returns to action this weekend (Jan. 22-23), when it travels to Lincoln, Neb., for the Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational and the adidas Classic.
