HISTORY 101
Colorado State (men) and Colorado (women) won the first Don Barrett Duals in 2009, as both squads compiled perfect 4-0 records. The Air Force men finished 2-2, while the women went 1-3. The Falcons accounted for four first-place finishes, including a sweep of the pole vault from Nick Frawley and Melissa Beerse. Kellen Curry won the 60-meter hurdles, while Sara Neubauer placed first in the shot put.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE...
In addition to the Don Barrett Duals, five freshmen members of the Air Force pole vault team will be traveling to Reno, Nev., for the 20th National Pole Vault Summit on Jan. 30. Chase Cooper, Pia Goodman, Bizzy Mellado, Cale Simmons and Rob Simmons will take part in the event, which features workshops and competition.
NEUBAUER REPEATS AS MWC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
For the second consecutive week, Sara Neubauer was selected as the MWC Athlete of the Week. It is the first time ever that Air Force has taken the league award in back-to-back weeks. Neubauer earned the honor after setting Academy records in the shot put and weight throw. She currently leads the conference in both events, while ranking 13th nationally in the shot put.
NOT TO SOUND LIKE A BROKEN RECORD, BUT...
Sara Neubauer broke Academy records in the shot put and weigh throw for the third time in as many meets. Neubauer reset her own records at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational, winning both the shot put (51'6¼") and weight throw (59'7¾"). Less than 24 hours later, she rewrote them again at the adidas Classic, cruising to event titles in both the shot put (52'3¾") and weight throw (60'1").
CAUTION, FALLING RECORDS
In addition to the Academy standards in the women's shot put and weight throw, two other Academy records fell to the wayside in Nebraska. Senior Ally Romanko smashed a pair of records on the track - including on which had stood for 28 years. At the NWU Invitational, Romanko broke Gail Conway's 1982 record in the 600-meter run, as she won the race with a time of 1:32.64. She went on to break her own standard in the 800 meters at the adidas Classic, placing second with a record-setting time of 2:09.94.
IT'S TYNER TIME
Junior Justin Tyner picked up first-place finishes in both events he competed in during the Falcons' weekend in Nebraska. Tyner won the 1000-meter run (2:27.43) at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 22, before earning the fastest time in the mile (4:07.55) at the adidas Classic. His time in the mile, which is seventh on the program's all-time list, is the second fastest in the conference and ranked 19th in the nation.
NOT A BAD DAY...
Five Falcons competed at the Potts Invitational on Jan. 23 and all five left Boulder with a share of an event victory. Chad LIscar placed first in the 200-meter dash, while James Dills, Michael Tibbs, Jacob Ringrose and Blair O'Bryant teamed up to win the 4x400-meter relay.
WHAT'S ON DECK
Air Force heads back out on the road next weekend (Feb. 6-7), traveling to Albuquerque, N.M. - site of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships - for the New Mexico Classic.
