FARGO, N.D. -
In its next road conference dual of the weekend, the Air Force wrestling team dropped a 26-18 decision to North Dakota State Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 5-8 on the season and 1-2 in the Western Wrestling Conference. Meanwhile, the Bison, who have won six straight dual meets, improve to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the WWC.
Following a decision by North Dakota State at 125 pounds, Air Force was awarded a forfeit victory at 133 pounds to take a 6-3 lead in the team scoring. The Falcons extended their advantage to 9-3 with a win from 16th-ranked Cole VonOhlen (Fr., Jackson, Minn.) over Ryan Adams at 141 pounds. With the score tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation, VonOhlen was rewarded an extra point for riding time to earn the 3-2 decision, avenging an earlier loss to Adams this season. With the win, VonOhlen improves to 23-5 on the year, including a 10-1 mark in dual action.
The Bison regained the lead with wins in each of the next three weight classes, scoring a fall and a pair of major decisions. Senior Tyler French (Malta, Mont.) stopped the run by NDSU with a win at 174 pounds, pinning Mac Stoll in a time of 6:21.
Although the Falcons trailed by just two points with three matches remaining, North Dakota State earned victories at 184 and 197 pounds to clinch the team victory. Heavyweight Stephen Larson (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) capped off the dual with a strong performance for the Falcons, earning a 5-0 decision over Joe Arthur. Larson has now won seven of his last eight matches, and improves to 9-3 in dual competition.
The Falcons return to action next weekend, Feb. 6, when they travel to Annapolis, Md., for the annual All-Academy Championships, hosted by Navy.
